Your RV Questions — Answered

At Ottawa Camping Trailers, we know that buying and owning an RV can come with lots of questions — from financing and towing to maintenance and trade-ins.
We’ve put together this helpful list of frequently asked questions to make your RV experience easier, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned camper.

What is the difference between "GVWR" and dry weight?

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the maximum weight designed to be supported by the axles. Dry weight is the weight of your RV empty. In some cases the "dry weight" excludes options, such as air conditioners, ovens and microwaves.

How do I winterize my unit?

We offer FREE seminars on how to prepare your unit for the cold winter months. They run in the Fall closer to when you actually need to do it so that the information remains fresh in your mind.

How often should I check my roof?

We suggest checking it twice a year. Inspect it in the spring and fall.

Do I need to have a propane inspection?

Many people don't do it, but it is a good sensible test to have done. It deals with everyone's safety.

What can I use to prevent my trailer from swaying?

We would suggest using torsion bars and a sway control. The combination will make the drive much safer.

When should I have the bearings on my trailer looked at?

We recommend repacking the bearings at least every 10,000km or once a year. Which involves compeltely removing, cleaning, inspecting, re-greasing, and reinstalling them. Replacing the seals should also be done at that time.
